What is the purpose of this website? To provide an opportunity for people living in and around Scullin, ACT to engage as a community on the development of a community garden.
What is a community garden? A community garden is a piece of land gardened collectively by a group of people. Most community gardens are run either as individual plots (where plot holders pay a fee and are responsible for looking after their plot) or communally (where the responsibility for the garden beds is shared and anyone who is part of the garden can harvest the food), or a combination of the two. Some gardens are open to the public, so anyone can share in the food whether they have helped in the garden or not, and some gardens are fenced and only accessible by the members.
Community gardens provide fresh (usually organic) food, provide exercise and relaxation, and provide opportunities to those who do not have the space to take part in gardening. They also look great and can be a lovely place for people to relax.
What are we proposing? If there is community support, we would like to set up a group to begin working on some ideas. We do not have a site. We are checking out one option and welcome any input on potential sites.
